Creating a Custom Multigrade Topic Set
A step-by-step guide for standards-based grading
Overview
If you teach a multigrade class using standards-based grading, and all students in the class are learning the exact same topics, you can build a custom topic set that pulls topics from multiple grade levels into a single class. This guide walks through how to create and apply one in eConnect.
Steps
1. Go to Class Schedules — Navigate to Scheduling > Class Schedules.
2. Add a class — Click to add a new class.
3. Select the subject — Under standards-based grading, choose the subject for this class.
4. Choose “Use Custom Topic Set” — This lets you pull topics from multiple grade levels into one class instead of using a single grade's standard topic list.
5. Pick an existing set or create a new one — Use a topic set that has already been built, or select “Create New Set” to build one from scratch. A new set is automatically scoped to the subject you selected in step 3.
6. Select a grade level and choose topics — Pick a grade level, then check off the specific topics you want included in the set.
7. Repeat for additional grade levels — If your multigrade class needs topics from more than one grade, move to the next grade level and select topics there as well.
8. Save the topic set — Once all desired topics across grade levels are selected, save. This custom set is now attached to the class and will be used for grading.

This feature gives you the flexibility to combine topics from several grade levels into one shared topic set for a single class, rather than being limited to one grade's default list.

Important: When to use this feature This feature is only for multigrade classes where every student is learning the same topics. If different students in the class are working on different topics, do not combine them into one class with a shared topic set. Instead, create separate classes for each group so grading stays accurate per student. |
