Grading_Points ONLY Method

AE-Connect supports two types of grading methods: percentage (default) and points (configured in class setup). This guide will specifically address the POINTS ONLY grading method and its unique aspects.

This guide will cover:

  • Setup of Points Only for the class
  • Weighted categories
  • Unweighted categories (points only class)
  • Extra Credit for points only class

Description

Explanation of Points Only Grading

The AE-Connect system allows users to grade assignments using a points only. This approach limits users to grading assignments solely in points. Grading solely in points involves calculating the students' term grade using the following formula:

Points Earned by Student / Total Points of the class = Student Term Grade.

Assignment  Student Received Total Points
Assigment 1 8 10
Assignment 2 14 20
Assignment 3 10 10
Total Points 32 40
Reported Grade (Term Grade) 32/40 = 80%

The example above demonstrates that assignments are evaluated solely based on a points system. These points are then accumulated to determine the final grade for the report.

Setup for Points Only Grading

Step 1:  User can choose points only in class creation or when editing the class.  User should navigate to Scheduling > Class Schedules to add or edit classes.

Step 2: Select the gear icon next to the class. This step must be performed for each individual class that wishes to utilize this method.

Step 3: Select the Use max points as weight calculation checkbox.

The checkbox is only accessible when assignments are evaluated exclusively based on points. If the class has assignments evaluated based on percentage or letter grade, the checkbox is not accessible.

You will observe that once the checkbox is selected, the Input as is grayed out and no longer available for modification. When the Use max points as weight calculation is checked, all assignments in the class must be evaluated based on points. The calculated grade for this class will be determined by the average points of all assignments.

Class Categories for Points ONLY

AE-Connect enables the creation of categories for all classes. When a class is points-only, the user has two options regarding categories:

  1. Weighted Categories
  2. Unweighted Categories

The following examples are derived from identical assignments, with the same assignment points and student scores. These examples illustrate the discrepancy in grades between weighted and unweighted categories.

This is only relevant if class has more than one category.

Weighted Categories

Users can create as many categories.  The category weighting will show the weights for each category in the gradebook and will also impact the overall grade of the student.

In this example you can see the use of weighted categories resulting the Final Grade being 75%

Unweighted Categories

This feature enables users to create many categories. The categories will be presented as percentages for the teacher, while the overall grade remains unaffected.  The unweighted categories are based on points. Example below. Spelling is 18/20 = 90% that is what the spelling category would show in AE-Connect.

In this example you can see the use of unweighted categories resulting the Final Grade being 78%

Category Setup

Weighted and Unweighted Categories are setup in each class when adding the class or editing the class.

Weighed Categories:  User can choose "Evenly Weighted" Or uncheck Evenly Weighted to weight the categories as the see fit.

Unweighed Categories:  User should choose "Unweighted Categories" in setting up the class or editing the class.

Extra Credit for Points Only Class

When the class is set up as points only the user has the option to select "Extra Credit" when adding an assignment. The extra credit assignment DOES NOT allow the assignment to have points.  The extra credit allows the user to add extra points to the student without affecting the overall points of the class.

User can choose this by adding an assignment and selecting the "Extra Credit"

Example of how extra credit affects student score

WITHOUT Extra Credit

Assignment  Student Received Total Points
Assigment 1 8 10
Assignment 2 14 20
Assignment 3 10 10
Total Points 32 40
Reported Grade (Term Grade) 32/40 = 80%
WITH Extra Credit

Assignment  Student Received Total Points
Assigment 1 8 10
Assignment 2 14 20
Assignment 3 10 10
Extra Credit 4
Total Points 36 40
Reported Grade (Term Grade) 37/40 = 90%
